The Importance of Spam Filtering

A large part of keeping your email inbox free of spam involves the use of spam filtering. Spam filters work to check each email that comes in to see whether or not it is spam.

There are two types of spam filters—those that are designed by the email user and those that are a part of commercially developed spam protection programs. Though both can be useful, there is a rather large difference between the two.

Differences in Spam Filters

A spam filter that is user-designed typically addresses one type of spam situation. For instance, a user may receive spam mail that offers excellent prices on Viagra and other prescription medications from Company XYZ. So, the user may go into his email program and set up a spam filter. The filter will stop any emails from Company XYZ from landing in his inbox.

In this case, no more spam mails from Company XYZ will come to that user; however, that very same spammer may send that very same email offer again…this time, from Company XQ10. So, the user will need to set up another spam filter for that company, or perhaps a filter with the prescription drug names.

The point is, each spam filter has one specific purpose which it addresses. Since spammers are constantly changing their tactics and methods, these spam filters are limited in how well they can work.

On the other hand, spam protection programs offer spam filters that are much more sophisticated. Their spam filters are designed to do so much more than what user-created spam filters are capable of doing.

Professional spam filter programs are able to instantly search the body of an email as it comes to your email inbox, looking for keywords and phrases that are known to be commonly used in spam mail. They can look for characteristics that are common in spam mails, such as links that purport to go one place, but that actually go to another. These programs can inspect every email that comes in—or, they can be set up to ignore certain email addresses (such as your Mom’s email address, perhaps). Additionally, professionally spam filter programs can work alone, without much guidance. Or, you can give input to the programs, adjusting the settings so as to increase the success rate even further.

Why a Spam Filter is Important?

Yes, you could function without a spam filter program by simply being extremely careful about which emails you open and what links you click on. However, getting a professional spam filter program is like getting peace of mind. You won’t have to worry that you might accidentally click on the wrong email because your hand on the mouse twitched. There will be no concerns about other people using your computer because you will know that your computer is protected against malware.

Without a spam filter program, your system could be in danger if you or someone else simply clicks on the wrong email at the wrong time—who wants to have to worry about that?
